A Big Day

A Big Day

I woke up at 4am this morning to travel from Pukenui to Cape Reinga for the start of Mums bike tour. After mum had taken off on her bike, we walked down to the lighthouse and took lots of photos.

After this we drove down to Ninety mile beach. While driving along the beach we saw lots of sand dunes. Half way down the beach we stopped so that I could bodyboard down the sand dunes. I had to climb all the way up a big sand dune before running and jumping on the body board and sliding all the way down.

Next we went to Mangonui to have a quick look around. There was a motorcycle meetup going on here so there was motorcycles parked all around the streets.

Afterwards we drove around the bay to Hihi, which is where Dad lived until he was 12. He told us lots of stories about what he did when he was growing up here.

We then drove another two hours to Waipoua Forest where we went for a walk to see the Lord of the forest, Tane Mahuta, the giant Kauri tree. It caught me by surprise how big he was! Before we went in to see Tane Mahuta we had to clean the bottom of our shoes because there is a disease killing Kauri trees and we would not like for people in the future to not be able to see the great tree.

Next we traveled an hour and a half
to spend the night at a
motel in Kaiwaka.
