Recount Writing - Term 4 2016

This is a piece of writing that retells and evaluates (what you think) events or experiences.

Title
A brief name for the experience or event.
Arahura Marae

Orientation
Tells when and where the event began and who was there.
Last Thursday morning the senior school went to the Arahura Marae for a school trip. We went to experience the Māori history and have fun at the same time. The Arahura Marae is on a hill and is about half an hour out of Greymouth.
Sequence of events
Tells the events in the order they happened.

You need to have a minimum of 3-4 events. Remember one topic per paragraph.  Your paragraph should have an introductory sentence use a time sequence word/phrase and then detail.

First, We had a pōwhiri process. It was a time of silence for the people who have passed away and have fought  for the people at the marae. I felt out of my comfort zone at the start of the pōwhiri process and when we did the hongi and the karanga. But after that it felt normal and fun. And the other people’s waiata sounded beautiful and calm. I think that our waiata was great as well.

After the delicious morning tea we went into the beautiful wharenui and shared our mihi. We were in a massive circle and when it was almost my turn I was nervous. But when it was my turn I felt excited and proud under the beautiful roof and I felt proud of my mihi.

After lunch we walked down to the Arahura river to find pounamu. Four people found pounamu and one person found a rare piece called lettuce pounamu. It was fun finding pounamu and there was heaps of different sounds like the birds and the river coming up onto the shore.  Then we went over to shallow bit in the river to cross over onto the beach where there was lots of sticks and a bit of rubbish.  We picked up the rubbish that was lying around. Then we got heaps of sticks on the beach and made some taniwha sculptures of Poutini.  In my group was me, Jaxon, Bryce and Clem.  It was fun collecting all the pieces that we needed and we were under pressure at the end when we were running out of time.  We came second equal with Callan’s group.  We thought our one looked cool and Jaxon told a really good story about it because we had the girl and the taniwha that are in the story of Poutini.

Personal Comment/Ending
Tells how the experience/event ended and some thoughts you may have about it.Screenshot 2016-12-07 at 9.22.23 AM.png

The marae stay was different to what we would usually but it was a fun and different experience.  I learnt a lot about the carving and that the front of the marae had a story behind it.  This is something I would do again in the future.

My Tanitwha-Writing

For  the past few week we have been practising using descriptive language in our writing. We have been trying to 'paint pictures with words .' We all got to invent  our own Taniwha.  We all drew our own Taniwha and then we had to describe what it looks like, what we do with our Taniwha and what our Taniwha is like. Then we read our work to a buddy and they had to  have a go at drawing our Taniwha.

Create and Describe Your Own Creature
(Nogard - Taniwha)

WALT: be descriptive in our writing.

Look at the description of a Nogard.  Now Create and describe your own creature that you will then be able to read to a buddy so that they can draw it.  Your description must be as detailed and clear as possible so that when you share it with others they will be able to visualise and draw you creature. Use lots of adjectives (describing words - big, small, round, green).

You must .....

  • Have a name for your creature
  • Start from the big things and work your way to the smaller things
  • Describe the shapes
  • Describe its neck, body, tail, wings etc.
  • What does its head look like?Think about its eyes, nose, eyebrows, mouth, teeth
  • Describe its legs/flippers/fins etc.
  • What colours is it?
  • Any extra details on the body like scales, spikes etc.
  • Keep it simple and clear!
  • Use correct punctuation and spelling.
  • Check that your sentences make sense.

Remember that a good writer ‘paints’ pictures in their reader’s head with words.   This is what good descriptive writing does.

Tuna

Have you seen a taniwha shivering through the water as fast as lightning? I have.

His name is Tuna. He has razor sharp teeth to catch his prey. His skin is as blue as the moana so he can camouflage. Tuna comes out when the moon sinks down on the moana.
Tuna can shoot a lightning kikorangi bolt out of his mouth. Tuna has amazing kākāriki patterns on his face and body. He has no wings . Tuna has kākāriki patterns and a  kikorangi fin on the back of his head. Tuna has dark blue lines on his back but not on his face and he has a purple tummy. He can fly with no wings. He jumps up and slithers through the sky and dives back into the water when he is ready. Me and Tuna go and play when the moon is out. We jump up and down meeting the guardian of the sky and sea. It’s fun. I like going to different places to do tricks in the air. I like watching Tuna when he's shooting his water balls through the air and hitting the targets on the mountain tops.

My Mihi

My mihi lets people know who I am.  My mihi is about my family.  To make it I used screencastify and google drawings.  We were learning to pronounce the Maori words properly.  We were learning to introduce ourselves in Maori.
